Book Review: Baby It’s Cold Outside by Susan May Warren

Baby It’s Cold Outside by Susan May Warren is a Christmas themed novel. I debated writing a review on this one because I didn’t end up loving it. But I’m sharing about it here because it might end up being the type of book someone else is looking for.

Synopsis

I love the plot of this book, which is why I picked it up in the first place. Five people who don’t know each other well get snowed in together in a house on Christmas weekend. It’s set in the 1940’s. Dottie is an older woman who has cut herself off from everyone in town after losing her son. Gordy is her neighbor who has been in love with her for 27 years. Violet served in the WAAC and is a very talented mechanic, but her skill set is frowned upon for women in this time period. Jake comes looking for Violet to tell her something important about someone she knew from the war. Lastly, Arnie is a young boy who gets caught in the storm coming home from school. He seeks shelter in Dottie’s barn.

With secrets between them coming to light, it ends up being a life changing Christmas for all five of them.

Thoughts

I really loved the writing at the beginning of the book, and I really wanted to love the whole thing. By the end though I felt like there wasn’t a lot of depth to the characters, and I wasn’t a big fan of the dialogue. I did like how the story ended, I think it was just the character development and dialogue that were a miss for me personally.

This is a Christian novel, which I didn’t know going into it. It was good, but just not what I was expecting. So if you do read it, that’s good to know beforehand so you know what to expect!
