Book Review: The Measure by Nikki Erlick

The description of this book was so intriguing to me! It’s different than anything I’ve read so far this year. It also went in a different direction than I thought it would. Keep reading for my review of The Measure by Nikki Erlick!

Synopsis

The whole world wakes up one day to a small box for each individual, with a string inside that represents how long that person’s life will be. This creates chaos, division, heartbreak, relief, and pretty much any other emotion imaginable. This book follows 8 strangers — some with long strings, some with short strings — whose paths intertwine as they figure out how to move forward with this knowledge.

Thoughts (Contains Spoilers)

There were a lot of different storylines here, and I liked the little moments throughout the book where you could see one storyline cross paths with another. Following a variety of characters with differing string lengths made it really interesting. It really made me think about what I would do in each of their different situations.

I really loved Ben & Amie’s story. The scene where Ben tells his parents about his string was one of my favorites from the book. I also loved how Nina was committed to Mara regardless of her short life. And Hank was one of my favorites, I really loved his character even though his was the shortest storyline.

This book would be great for a book club because there was so much to discuss! I’m still thinking about it days later.
