Book Review: The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

There are some books that you read a description of and automatically want to pick up the book. The Midnight Library by Matt Haig was one of those books for me.

Synopsis

The majority of this book takes place in a library. But not just any library — a library on the edge of the universe where each book contains a different version of how a person’s life could turn out. There is a book based on each decision you made, and how it may have lead to a different outcome. Nora finds herself in the library, experiencing different versions of the life she now lives. She faces the decision to keep the one she has, or exchange it for one of her other possible lives found in the library. She tries out life as a music star, an Olympic athlete, a scientist, and more. In the end she has to figure out what is most important to her and what actually makes her happy.

Thoughts

When I was reading this I felt like there were parts that got a little long and felt unnecessary, and I was sort of annoyed by that when I finished the book. I decided it was a good idea for a book, but I didn’t love it as much as I wanted to.

Over the next couple weeks, however, I found myself constantly thinking about this book. Not the specific storyline, but just the idea of the midnight library in general. It was very thought-provoking for me. It made me think about a lot of other big life questions. I realized that I should be giving this book a lot more credit for how much time it spent in my brain. It’s not often that I can’t stop thinking about a book and the ideas presented for weeks after.

Am I the only one who realizes they liked a book more than they thought after giving it a little bit of time? I don’t think this is the first time this has happened to me. You can read this book for free on Libby or from your local library, or you can buy your own copy here.
