There has been a lot of hype for this book. That’s sometimes not a great thing because it means expectations are sky high from the get go. I’m sharing a brief synopsis and my review of Daisy Jones & The Six below!
Synopsis
Daisy Jones was born to two famous parents who don’t really want anything to do with her. She spends her teenage years partying and writing her own music. People are enamored by Daisy — she is beautiful, confident, and talented. A band called The Six comes to California to work on their music, and they have the same agent as Daisy. After The Six releases a hit song featuring Daisy Jones, the decision is made to add Daisy to the band (hence the name, Daisy Jones & The Six).
Billy is the lead singer of The Six, and up until that point has called all the shots for the band and their music. Daisy is not intimidated by Billy at all. Although they butt heads repeatedly, they are both extremely talented song writers who create magic when they can work together. This is a story comprised of interviews with all of the band members and other characters, retelling their versions of what happened during this time and what eventually lead to the break up of the band.
Thoughts
The format of this book is pretty unique: It’s a documentary-style fiction novel. I actually thought Daisy Jones & The Six was a real band when I finished the book. I was surprised and maybe a little sad when I went to look for their songs and discovered that they don’t exist. I’d consider that a huge compliment to the author for crafting a story and characters that felt so real.
Many of the characters in this book are unlikable. I don’t think they are meant to be. But it does make it hard to cheer them on. The one character I really liked was Camila. She was put into really difficult situations and was always strong and put her family first. Loved Camila, didn’t care for the rest of them.
