This book has gotten a lot of hype, so I was excited to read it. The female lead, Elizabeth, was not your typical romance fiction lead in my opinion. Keep reading for my review of Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus!
Synopsis
Elizabeth Zott is a Chemist in the 1950’s. As a woman in STEM in this time period, her career path has not been easy. Despite her brilliance, she has been assaulted, plagiarized, and discredited. When Elizabeth Zott first meets Calvin Evans, she thinks he’s another entitled male Chemist who has it a million times easier than her based solely on his gender. But there is an undeniable chemistry (pun intended) between the two of them, and when they get together, they are an unstoppable team. Both of them have suffered many tragedies in their pasts, and both are committed to their work and to each other. Through another set of tragedies they experience, Elizabeth finds herself in the public eye continuing to face discrimination and fight for her right to her contributions to science.
Thoughts
I loved that this was a love story, and also a story about Elizabeth’s career. I found it infuriating and inspiring. The only thing I didn’t love was that I felt Mad was a bit unrealistic. I loved that she was this unique genius kid, but a lot of it was too far fetched… a 4 year old who reads full books, goes to the library alone and makes friends with a priest… I felt like it was just too much and it made it unrealistic. But besides that I really did enjoy this book and I’d definitely recommend it!
