A new year means a lot of new books! There are so many books that come out every year, and it can be overwhelming to sift through everything and figure out which ones are for you. I’ve gone through hundreds of new books coming out in 2023, and these are a few that stood out to me!
Mystery/Thriller
The Way of the Bear by Anne Hillerman
This one is set in Utah’s Bears Ears National Park, which immediately interested me. The Navajo Tribal police are investigating a death in Bears Ears National Park. Another death happens soon after, and there are many suspicious details about each. The officers must use skill and intuition to ensure that justice is served. You can find The Way of the Bear here. Expected release date is April 2023.
You Must Remember This by Kat Rosenfield
An 85 year old woman named Miriam walks out onto an icy lake. When the ice breaks under her, no one is there to save her. No one knows if it was purely an accident, a suicide, or if she was lured out onto the lake. Her complicated family makes for a lot of suspects. Her death will leave her family with many questions that lead them to discover deep secrets about her past. You can find You Must Remember This here. Expected release date is January 2023.
The Resort by Sarah Goodwin
Mila and Ethan are on their way to a wedding at a ski resort when their car dies and won’t start again. They’re in an isolated, snowy area, and they feel they have no option but to start walking. They come across an abandoned cabin and decide to break in to spend the night. But Ethan is gone when Mila wakes up the next morning. You can find The Resort here. Expected release date is 2023.
Romance Fiction
Happy Place by Emily Henry
I’ve read multiple Emily Henry books, so naturally I had to put this one on my list. Harriet and Wyn take the same week long vacation with their friends ever year. But this year will be different: they’ve been broken up for 5 months and haven’t told anyone. They decide to pretend like they’re still together so they don’t ruin the trip for anyone. But trying to fool their best friends along with navigating their lingering feelings for each other proves more difficult than they thought. You can find Happy Place here. Expected release date is April 2023.
End of Story by Kylie Scott
Susie inherits a charming fixer upper and she can’t wait to make it her own. She quickly learns that the contractor is her ex’s best friend, Lars, so the sooner the repairs are done, the better. Lars makes a bizarre discovery in the walls of the house — a divorce certificate with his and Susie’s names on it. The certificate is dated 10 years in the future. Lars and Susie have to work together to figure out how the certificate came to be, and figure out if there is actually a possibility of something between them. You can find End of Story here. Expected release date is February 2023.
Exes and O’s by Lea
Tara is a romance novelist and is labeled a “stage 5 clinger” by her 10 exes. She decides to revisit those relationships in hopes of a second chance romance. She convinces her new roommate, Trevor, to help her rekindle a relationship with one of her exes. You can find Exes and O’s here. Expected release date is January 2023.
Meet Me at the Lake by Carley Fortune
When I read the description of this one, it sort of reminded me of November 9 by Colleen Hoover. Fern and Will spend 24 hours together and have an undeniable chemistry. They decide to meet again one year later, but Will never shows up. Nine years later, Will shows up in her life again. She needs his help, but she doesn’t know if she can trust him. Find Meet Me at the Lake here. Expected release date is May 2023.
Begin Again by Emma Lord
Andie always has an organized plan for everything she does. When her plans for school go off the rails, her relationship gets complicated, and she faces a problem she can’t find a fix for, Andie has to figure out how to handle life when it doesn’t go according to her plans. You can find Begin Again here. Expected release date is January 2023.
YA Novels
The Roof Over Our Heads by Nicole Krozner
This one sounds like a fun YA novel. Finn loves theater, just like the rest of his family. His family is made up of actors and directors. They even live in an old victorian home owned by Minnesota’s largest Theater. When they find out the new theater director’s plans to take the house and force them to move somewhere else, they put on an immersive 1890’s show to try to save their home from being taken from them. You can find The Roof Over Our Heads here. Expected release date is January 2023.
Fantasy
The Daugters of Izdihar by Hadeer Elsbai
I don’t usually read very many books in this genre, but this one sounds really intriguing to me. This is a story about two young women, inspired by Egyptian History. Nehal is a waterweaver, whose powers are limited by her lack of education. Her family can’t afford to send her to school, and she’s forced to marry into a wealthier family. But her spouse is in love with a girl named Giorgina. Giorgina is an earthweaver, and she is part of a radical women’s rights group. Nehal and Giorgina are brought together, despite their differences, to fight for their freedom and protect their powers. You can find The daughters of Izdihar here. Expected release date is January 2023.
Nonfiction
All the Beauty in the World by Patrick Bringley
If you love art and museums, this might be a good pick for you. This book is written by Patrick Bringley, who spent a decade as a museum guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Patrick had a glamorous career with The New Yorker, but when his brother was diagnosed with a fatal illness, he left his corporate job and sought solace in the most beautiful place to him: The Met. This is the story of his connection with the art, and a look at people behind the scenes who make the museum run. You can find All the Beauty in the World here. Expected release date is February 2023.
Historical Fiction
The Cuban Heiress by Chanel Cleeton
A 1934 luxury cruise from New York to Havana becomes a fight for survival for an heiress and a woman everyone thinks is dead. They must work together to discover who on the ship wants the heiress dead, and to right a wrong to ensure that justice is served. You can find The Cuban Heiress here. Expected release date is April 2023.
The First Ladies by Marie Benedict
I’m always on the lookout for historical fiction that isn’t about war. This book is inspired by the friendship between first lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Civil Rights activist Mary Mcleod Bethune. Mary becomes renowned in the Black community and recognized by the President for her work as an activist. The first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, is eager to meet her. They bond over their passions for women’s rights and education. Eleanor Roosevelt is criticized for her outspokenness on Civil Rights, but the two women stay dedicated to the cause of justice and equality. This is one of my most anticipated new books coming out int 2023! You can find The First Ladies here. Expected release date is June 2023.
